Servers is an audio-visual “consciousness” garden and a digital reforestation project planting the first seeds in Soho’s Photographers Quarter, London, UK.A futurescape that peeks into the inner workings of a bespoke technology called the Synaptic Lineage, a garden capable of saving and storing earth's memories created by a gifted, rouge neuroscientist named Brooks. Her copyrighted neuronal migration service transports and transforms burdensome memories accelerating the healing process from underground brain salons called neurocosmetology labs. Brooks populates her findings into a healing garden where users can observe as destructive memories are archived and a forest of trees emerges.&nbsp; Designed as an augmented reality work, the piece Guided by design duo Hyphen-Labs the three artists featured in this exhibition consider the pluralities associated with borders to rediscover hidden histories, negotiate possible futures, and uncover alternative presents. ANYTHING TO DECLARE? is an interdisciplinary research-led residency that aims to redefine real and imagined spaces as well as the digital and physical experiences of everyday life. By uncovering the jarring divisions that are at play in our world, the presented projects intertwine post-detonative geofutures, speculative hardware inspired by Caribbean culture and anti-capitalistic utopias of counter-economies. DirectionIn 2021,Superfly contracted Hyphen-Labs as Experiene Designers and Creative Directors, to help the development and execution of two large scale immersive experiences based on the music and lives of two legacy artists. Designed for any music fan, 10 spaces guided visitors through the life and work of one of the most important artists of our generation.&nbsp; Presented by Superfly in partnership with The Prince Estate, we oversaw and directed the planning, design and implementation supported by JRA.&nbsp; Visitors were able to step inside Purple Rain’s album cover; visit a recreation of Prince’s infamous STUDIO A to mix an iconic hit; and dance in an audio visual space designed by Roy Bennett.&nbsp; The entire space has bespoke sound powered by Bose. The experience showcases his iconic albums, outfits, guitars and artifacts&nbsp; courtsey of The Prince Estate.&nbsp; The result is an interactive, one-of a kind attraction celebrating the legacy of this beloved and visionary artist.&nbsp;Designed for music lovers young and old, Prince fans, families and everyone in between, Prince: The Immersive Experience takes visitors through more than 10 multidimensional spaces, where they can experience Prince’s life, creative evolution, and original sound in a new and illuminating way. Presented by Superfly in partnership with The Prince Estate along with planning, design and implementation support by JRA, this interactive trip lets visitors step inside the Purple Rain album cover; head into Prince’s beloved Paisley Park workspace Studio A to mix an iconic greatest hit; and get down to an audiovisual dance party designed by Prince’s lighting designer, Roy Bennett. At Hülshoff Castle, the poet's birthplace, you can experience the cosmos of her microscopic manuscripts. Erutan/Nature, 2022Hamburg, GermanyLocated at the Castle Hülshoff, a sight specific installation based on the life and poetry of one of Münster’s most famous poets, Anette von Droste-Hülshoff.&nbsp; Her poem, the elements explores themes of nature and our relationship to it.The nature contaminates the space, with it’s reflections scattered around the transformed bathroom. Responding to Anette von Droste-Hülshoff’s poem The Elements (Die Elemente), mirrors reflect nature, bringing it inside and transforming the pixels in the bathroom.All 4 elements are represented in the corners of the space. Reflected and scatteredaround the space creating a forged nearness with nature. PushMi PullYu, 2021 Client: Schering Stiftung Gallery, Berlin Creative Direction: Hyphen-Labs Tech Direction:Kai LabCuration: Christina Landbrecht, Nele Heinevetter&nbsp; Collaborators: John Dylan-Haynes, Mary-Katherine Heinrich Through its solo exhibition “PushMi PullYu,” the international art and design studio Hyphen-Labs transforms the exhibition space of the Schering Stiftung into a laboratory for decision-making. In the installation, robots swarm, make decisions, move within set borders, experience outside influences and have individual interactions. Their paths are based on arbitrary human decisions painting temporary canvases of collective thoughts on the walls. The intervention “PushMi PullYu” is inspired by both swarm behavior observed in nature and their dialogue with the neuroscientist John-Dylan Haynes, professor at the Berlin-based Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience. In 2008, Haynes’s experiments showed that relevant brain signals are present ten seconds before the making of a conscious decision. This research has provided a boost to proponents of determinism, the theory that we humans do not have free will, rather our decisions are constrained by the determinist nature of the world. In 2015, follow-up research by Haynes showed that these brain signals can be “overruled” by a conscious decision. The exhibition navigates between the poles of free will and determinism, of individualism and the collective behavior. Using Haynes’s studies as a backdrop, Hyphen-Labs collaborated with swarm intelligence researcher Dr. Mary Katherine Heinrich and creative technologists Kai Labs to re-program familiar housebound robots for the purposes of exploring the parallels between these two opposing states of being. Visitors trigger the swarm’s algorithm by activating either a red or blue light, or both, which sends a message to the machines and alters their behaviour. These interventions allow us to constantly influence the scenario and question the complex relations of body and mind, individual and group, man and machine. Through “PushMi PullYu,” Hyphen-Labs invites us to take a contemporary look at the recurring question in science and philosophy: Do we have free will? How do we define free will? How much freedom do individuals have and how does it affect collective action?
